The Conversation You Are Avoiding Might Change Your Life.

Dear Royal,

A few years ago, I heard someone say, “Silence keeps more people stuck than failure ever will.”

At first, I disagreed.

I used to think that silence and leaving situations to time and chance were the wiser options. I believed what held people back was fear of failure, lack of money, or simply a lack of access to the right opportunities.

But the more I observed people’s lives, including my own, the more I realised that many of our biggest breakthroughs are waiting on one conversation we are too afraid to have.

If you are reading this, there is probably a conversation you have been avoiding. Maybe it’s asking for the raise you have earned. Telling someone they hurt you. Ending a relationship that no longer serves either of you. Saying no without apologising. Or admitting that you are not okay.

You have rehearsed this conversation in the shower, in the car, at midnight, yet you have said nothing to them.

Could it be that this conversation is hard, or are you concerned about what might change once you say them? Let’s find out below.

Why You Are Probably Avoiding It

Avoidance feels like protection. If you don’t bring it up, nothing has to change. The relationship stays intact, the job stays comfortable, and the version of yourself that hasn’t confronted anything stays untouched. But that safety is an illusion. The tension doesn’t disappear when you avoid the conversation; it just moves underground, where it quietly shapes your decisions, your relationships, and your confidence.

Most people avoid conversations because they learned that speaking up leads to conflict, rejection, or loss. So silence became the safer bet.

The problem is, silence has a cost, too.

What it’s actually costing you

Every unspoken conversation quietly withdraws from the same account: your self-respect.

Each time you swallow the truth to keep the peace, you teach yourself that your needs are negotiable. Over time, that adds up to resentment, disconnection, or a version of your life that was chosen by default rather than on purpose.

The contract or business opportunity you haven’t addressed doesn’t stay neutral; it either moves forward or it slowly falls apart. The boundary you haven’t set doesn’t stay quiet; it gets tested again and again until you either enforce it or abandon it. Avoidance doesn’t freeze the problem. It just picks the outcome for you.

Why It Could Change Everything

The conversation you’re avoiding usually sits at the edge of something significant: a truer relationship, a job you actually want, a version of yourself with a spine. That’s exactly why it feels so heavy. It’s not a small ask. It’s a threshold.

On the other side of that conversation is clarity; a conversation with your manager could lead to new responsibilities you have been waiting for. A conversation with a mentor could save you years of unnecessary mistakes. A conversation with your spouse could rebuild a relationship you thought was beyond repair. A conversation with yourself could make you admit that you have outgrown the version of life you have been settling for.

Not every difficult conversation ends the way you hope. Some will disappoint you. Some may even close doors. But even then, you’ll have something silence can never give you: clarity. And clarity is almost always a better place to build a life than uncertainty.

How To Actually Start It

You don’t need the perfect script. You need an opening line and the willingness to stay in the room once it gets uncomfortable.

Speak with respect and with humility and say something like: “There’s something I have been wanting to say, but I have been putting it off.”

That single sentence does the hardest part; it opens the door. Everything after that is just honesty, one sentence at a time.

Go straight to the point. Don’t over-explain. Say what is true, then give room for the incoming silence, which you don’t have to fill.

Expect discomfort — theirs and yours. Discomfort isn’t a sign you’re doing it wrong. It’s a sign you are finally doing it.

The Conversation is the Door

Royal, the conversation you are avoiding isn’t just about the outcome. It is about who you become on the other side of it.

You become someone who tells the truth even when their voice shakes and someone who chooses clarity over comfort.

You don’t need to have the conversation perfectly. You just have to have it. Pick the person, pick the moment, and say the first sentence. The life you are waiting for is often just one honest conversation away.
