The Identity Shift That Has to Happen Before Anything Else Changes

Dear Royal,

If you are still getting the same results after changing your routine, auditing your circle, improving your spiritual life, regulating your content consumption, your morning hour, your job, maybe moving cities or countries, then let me quickly share something nobody told you.

You did not need a new schedule. You needed a new identity.

Most of us approach change backwards. We think that if we do the disciplined thing long enough, we will eventually become disciplined. So, we wait for proof before we accept the title.

We say, “I am trying to be consistent”

Instead of, “I am a consistent person who is currently inconsistent in this one area.”

That sentence sounds like a technicality, but it is the entire hinge.

A person who sees themselves as undisciplined will keep finding reasons their discipline failed; “I was tired”; “My strategy was wrong”; “The season was hard”…

A person who is convinced that they are disciplined treats a missed day as an exception rather than as evidence.

Same missed day. Completely different aftermath. One spirals into shame and quits. The other adjusts and continues. The behaviour didn’t change first. The identity did.

This is why the goal-setting alone never works. You can write the vision board, the 90-day plan, the five-year strategy, and still quietly sabotage it because, somewhere underneath, you are still operating as the person who doesn’t finish things, who isn’t taken seriously, who is “just trying.”

You cannot build sustainable results on top of an identity that contradicts them.

Who Am I?

Before you change one more habit, ask yourself a harder question: Who am I, underneath the affirmations?

Not who you’re trying to become. Who you currently believe you already are, in the quiet, unobserved moments. That belief is running the show. It decided what you attempted, how hard you tried, and how quickly you gave up when it got uncomfortable.

The shift isn’t pretending to be someone you’re not. It’s deciding who you’re becoming before life gives you proof. Then, little by little, your actions begin catching up to that decision.

Royal, this is the part nobody puts in the productivity course, because it isn’t a system. It’s a confrontation. And it’s the one you cannot outsource, automate, or shortcut.

Decide who you are. Then everything else that follows will have something solid to stand on.

  1. Shakespeare said, education begins when you realize that you know nothing. Absolutely, we need to understand who we are

  2. “The shift isn’t pretending to be someone you’re not. It’s deciding who you’re becoming before life gives you proof”

This is being very realistic and blunt, this words work !
